Frog and Tortoise Sweet Bowl. The focal point of the sweet bowl is the Frog Prince. He stands, balancing on one leg, holding the upside-down tortoise carapace upon his shoulders, much like an animated Atlas holding up the world cup. His followers kneel around him in awe of his power and strength. At the base of the piece is a pangolin. This represents Southern Africa’s Royal animal. Believed that when a king eats the flesh of one, his progeny will be male. Encircling the pangolin are small Ndoros. A valuable and much admired shell that was used as a form of jewellery by the Torwa and Ruzvi people in Southern Africa. The Ndoro symbolises fertility and youthful desires, as well as wealth and prosperity.
