Elephant Chura Bull Silver Sculpture

The Chura Bull is probably best known for being Zimbabwe’s biggest tusker. He resided in the Tashinga area on the shores of Lake Kariba for most of the year, but for about four months from January, he would travel to Spurwing Island to meet up with the cow herds who gathered to feed on the lush lakeside grass fields.

The Chura Bull was a relatively calm elephant when approached by boat, but he was not as approachable on land and would definitely make it known when visiting time was up! The Chura Bull featured in the legendary Clint Eastwood movie ‘White Hunter Black Heart’ in 1990. He died on April 5th, 1991, at the age of 55 after fighting with a younger bull. He was probably unable to defend himself due to the length of his tusks. Prior to the Chura Bull’s death, a great friend of Patrick’s, as well as one of the finest artists to come out of Zimbabwe, Larry Norton, spent quite a bit of time studying the Chura Bull. He subsequently produced a series of paintings of the old elephant in its natural element, strolling through the shallows of Lake Kariba.
