Equatorial Palm Tree Candelabra & Gorilla Family

The two families of gorillas are ‘The Chairman’ and his troop of six members and two babies, and the rival family, headed by the silverback ‘Tom’ (a.k.a. Peter), who presides over four gorillas and two babies. There are two collections, or ‘families’, of gorillas. Patrick made the first family five years ago and this set includes a powerful silverback, ‘The Chairman’ with his wives clutching babies and a frustrated young male (Pubic Peter) who lies on his back beating his chest.

Because the family forms a table centrepiece with date palm candle holders, you will see some of the beasts with arms outstretched as if reaching up to gather fruit from the palms. Of the second family, Patrick says, ‘I made the second family for two reasons. Firstly, a customer with a particularly large table required another family to fill it, and secondly, I felt obligated to create another family whilst I was still intrigued and inspired by this unusual subject matter’.

The second family depicts the aggressive young male, now grown up, as the new bwana (or boss) of new, healthy, childbearing females. Peter stands on his back legs and shouts defiantly at his father across the table.
