Clever, opportunistic predators, hyaenas live in family groups and are mostly nocturnal. They will eat anything from a grasshopper to, with a little help, a giraffe.

The hyaena is famed for having the strongest jaws of any mammal. But they can move fast too, over 45km/hr when they have to. They hunt more than they scavenge, and will also gang up to drive a lone predator off its kill whenever they get a chance. Hyaena females are larger than the males, and dominate the family group or small pack. Their babies are born every year in summer and are kept safe in a burrow for several months before they are taught to hunt and forage over the territory. They are famously vocal animals, with a range of grunts, whoops, yells and giggles especially when excited or feeding. Their role in the ecological balance is to weed out the sick or weak, and keep other animals (including people) healthy, fast, bush-wise and alert.
