The beautiful Malachite kingfisher inhabits almost all the waterways of southern Africa. One of the smallest of our kingfishers, measuring about 14 cm tall, they are nevertheless efficient predators on frogs, small fish and insects. They still-hunt by perching on low reeds or branches overhanging the water, which is where they can often be observed, catching the eye with their bright colours and lovely turquoise cap.
