The name ‘Gnu’ comes from the Bushman word, describing the call this antelope makes - a kind of twanging gulp. The Blue wildebeest (‘wild cattle’) are also known as Brindled gnu, and form herds of around 30 animals. Wildebeest used to migrate in their thousands over the continent but today these huge movements are only found in east Africa.
Blue Wildebeest have excellent hearing and sense of smell, and favour the open savannah where they often associate with keener-eyed zebras. The wildebeest has a characteristic shape - a heavy, dark head carries sharp, hooked horns and its sloping back ends in a horse-like tail. A shaggy dark mane above and below the neck sets off its grey hide which has a silvery-blue sheen in bright sunlight. The males hold a territory by marking it with their scent - even when on the move, they defend a zone which contains their harem of females.
A wildebeest calf can run beside its mother within minutes of being born.
