Brought back from the very edge of extinction, the African wild dog is a cooperative hunter, running in packs and having a distinct strategy for success.
The home range of a pack of wild dogs is huge, averaging 450 square kilometres, but central to this is an underground den where the pups are guarded by stay-at-home ‘aunties’, who will be given a share of the hunt on the pack’s return. They only survive in the largest of reserves today.
Wild dogs have never been known to attack people in the wild. They are very inquisitive, and will approach a stationary vehicle to inspect it, uttering high, bird-like calls. Their packs seem to be matriarchal, organised around a dominant couple.
