One of the most conspicuous of Africa's raptors, the Bateleur is a famously agile and flamboyant avian acrobat.
Bateleur means ‘acrobat’ in French, and this striking eagle is easy to identify in the wild as it zooms around, rocking a little like a fixed-wing stunt pilot. When displaying for his mate, he loops the loop and rolls, soaring and stalling and generally showing off. When hunting the Bateleur is capable of an amazing stoop, which at full speed sounds ‘like a six-inch shell’.
Its very short tail and beautiful curved wings give it a new-moon shape in flight; at rest it is also striking, with a bright red face and large, black head and shoulders.
It is fond of snakes and lizards, often taking these on the ground, as well as other small mammals and at times, carrion.
