Guinea Fowl Pair (Medium) on Blackwood base

Guinea Fowl Pair (Medium) on Blackwood base

One of Africa's best known game birds, the Guinea fowl is widespread on the subcontinent, foraging in small flocks, never too far from water. Its beautiful plumage has inspired many decorative themes in the African craft markets.

The southern African Helmeted Guinea Fowl is a striking bird with an easily identifiable silhouette. I have created these birds in three classic poses; the alert sentry, a hen pecking at silver maize pips and the Guinea Fowl as it appears when walking. The plumage of the Guinea Fowl has distinctive white spots that have been rendered in silver by the painstaking process of raised relief. As was the intention behind the design, each time the birds are burnished with a silver cloth, these raised spots shine more brightly against the body of the bird which having less direct contact with the cloth remains subtly duller. All three pieces are hallmarked and signed by myself.
