The handsome Sable antelope is easily distinguished by his midnight black coat and sweeping horns.

Imposing, regal, the sable antelope has been used as an heraldic device in colonial insignia for hundreds of years. To see a pair of glossy, midnight-black bulls jousting for dominance is one of Africa’s most enthralling sights. The dramatic, back-swept horns are fearsome weapons and in African folklore the sable is honoured for its courage, as it will fight bravely against all comers (except of course a long-distance rifle) - even putting lions to flight. A mortally wounded sable will refuse defeat, lying down and attempting to disembowel its attacker by hooking and slashing out with its razor-sharp horns. The females (up to 30 in a territorial herd) carry the same striking ‘African mask’ features but are brown in colour and carry straighter, slimmer horns; the nursery herds are ruled by a head female. When babies are born, the mothers hide them in thick scrub for up to a month - the mother suckling the youngster just twice a day, when she will move her baby to a new hiding place.
