Leopards are Africa’s most beautiful cats, with intelligence and courage to match. They are capable of dragging a large antelope straight up into the top branches of a tree, where they will enjoy their kill at leisure, out of reach of hyaenas and other predators.

With deadly grace and spectacular beauty, the leopard has earned its rank among Africa’s ‘big five’. They are still surprisingly widespread, but not often seen in the wild - except when they choose to show themselves. Secretive, intelligent and very powerful, these mainly nocturnal cats prefer riverine forest and rocky mountainous areas with plenty of cover. Although persecuted by farmers, they are useful predators, controlling baboons (their favourite prey), warthogs and other crop-raiding animals. In the night, the leopard’s call sounds like a someone sawing a log with short, quick strokes. The males are territorial and mostly solitary except when busy courting a female, who then brings up her cubs alone. Their beautiful rosette patterned skins are an incredibly effective camouflage, day or night. They are great climbers and often rest up in a favourite tree, draped languidly over a thick branch with a good field of view. Although they far prefer to avoid people, a wounded or cornered leopard is an extremely dangerous prospect.
