Though they live and thrive in the world’s bleakest and most inhospitable place, the Emperor penguins’ sense of community and co-operation stands testament to the magic of the natural world.
Emperor penguins have always fascinated me, their life story is as remarkable as their physical shape.
Whole colonies of penguins journey into the Antarctic interior, some as far as 120 km inland. It is here that the female lays her single egg and almost immediately, transfers it onto the broad feet of her husband. She then returns to the sea whilst the male precariously incubates their precious egg. The females return once the chicks have hatched two months later, and it is only then that the males are relieved of their difficult task, having had no nourishment for sometimes up to three months, and enduring temperatures where all other life ceases to exist.
