From the Shingwedze area of the Kruger National Park, Joao was named after the famous hunter and trader Joao Albasini.
Famed for his magnificent tusks, of which the left was last recorded as being 2,66m long and weighing 60kg (the right weighed in at 55kg), Joao was an extremely lucky and hardy elephant. In 1982 he was severely wounded by ivory poachers, hit four times by AK47 bullets. Tranquillised and his wounds repaired Joao made an excellent recovery.
By 1984 Joao had broken both of his tusks. (Did he do it himself to escape persecution? No one will ever know.) The pieces were never found and thus the final length of his tusks can never be determined.
