In the Shangaan dialect Mafunyane means "the irritable one". This magnificent but bad-tempered bull elephant, who stood 3,27m at the shoulder, was easily recognisable by his straight chisel-ended tusks and by the large hole in his forehead. The size of a man's fist, and probably the result of an old bullet wound, this hole went right down through to his nasal passage. When he spouted water from his trunk a similar spout issued out of his forehead!
His tusks weighed 55.1 kilograms each and were 2,51 metres long. Beautifully matched, his tusks touched the ground in front of him and were bevelled from the constant friction. He died in 1983 of natural causes on his home range in the Kruger National Park.
