One of the truly legendary tuskers of Southern Africa in the last century, no hunter ever managed to get close enough to Ndlulamiti.
It is a name revered among the Shangaan people of
South Eastern Africa. It means “Taller than the Trees”.
Ndlulamithi was one of the largest bull elephants in the Kruger National
Park with an estimated shoulder height of about 11ft 4in. His huge tusks weighed 142lbs and 126lbs respectively. His left tusk measured 9ft 5in and the right was slightly shorter at 9ft.
His huge size and the weight of his tusks made him a great prize for ivory
hunters and poachers who pursued him tirelessly every time he left the Kruger Park.
Like Mafunyane, he was shy and elusive so was seldom seen. He died of natural causes in 1985 at the approximate age of 58 years old which was a
good age for an African elephant. Few live longer than 55 years.
