This cunning game bird is found in the dry bushveld in and around the Kalahari Desert and also in similar terrain in the Eastern Transvaal, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Swainson's Francolin ideally prefer areas near streams and water holes but they can be found far from water in the dry season, taking in sufficient moisture from fruits and bulbs. They are commonly found in groups of about 6 and are both monogamous and territorial.
Males often stand on an open branch or an anthill and call loudly, particularly at dusk before finding a suitable place to rest in the trees. When alarmed, francolin run through the grass in a comical crouched position.
