Each of the four Zim Bangles bears one of the mystical patterns worked into the masonry of the famous stone ruins found in Zimbabwe - sites such as the Khami Ruins near Bulawayo and the Great Zimbabwe itself.
Zim Bangles
The ancient Munhumutapa Dynasty of central Zimbabwe constructed many magnificent fortifications of architectural wonderment. The most intricate and famous of these stone-walled settlements are the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. A complex maze of beautifully constructed walls and terraces this impressive site was once home to the most powerful monarchy of ancient southern Africa.
The people who built these walls, worked into them fascinating geometric patterns. Each pattern carries its own symbolism based on the folklore and beliefs of those times. The four patterns were the basis of the design of the Zim Bangles.
Chevron - Symbolic of youth and male virility this pattern, the 'Snake of the Mountain' is also associated with rainmaking.
Herringbone - Symbolic of youth, beauty and female fertility this is the bangle featuring the mystical pattern for 'Snake of the Water'.
Check - Symbolic of male seniority and the male crocodile in its pool; a powerful pattern represented on the bangle of 'Age and Wisdom'.
Cord - Signifying the wisdom of the mature female and associated both with unity and the female crocodile, this bangle bears the pattern associated with the dwelling of the Ritual Sister, the political and spiritual advisor to the Chief.
