This is my original design for a small to medium size table and is still my favourite. Each piece was made to hold two candles at different heights and has elephants at its base. The Mopane Trees, although different, have a gentle symmetry and the setting in my mind were those semi-submerged trees in Lake Kariba.
At the base of the first Mopane Tree are two cow elephants with their calves around a mud pool. Whilst one mother gently extricates her playful calf from its mud bath, the other stands up waiting for her calf to come and suckle, as elephants do, from between her front legs. All around the edge of the mud bath are elephant footprints.
Beneath the second Mopane Tree are two bull elephants. The old tusker is bent down on one knee with his trunk outstretched as if to drink. The young askari - an East African word for policeman that also denotes vigilant young bull elephants - stands on higher ground on the lookout for danger.
Both pieces are hallmarked and individually signed by myself.
