Traditionally, Nguni cattle represent wealth and these animals remain a powerful symbol of riches throughout central and southern Africa to this day.

Nguni cattle are a highly adapted, hardy breed which came to southern Africa over 8000 years ago. The cattle derive their name from the Nguni peoples of southern Africa: the Zulu, Swazi, Ndebele, Shangaan, and Xhosa tribes. A striking characteristic of the Nguni breed is that within a single herd there can be several different colours of hide in a variety of beautiful patterns. This trait was exploited by the famous Zulu king, Chaka, who ordered his different regiments to each use hides of a distinctive colour and pattern for their full-length war shields. Chaka’s ceremonial guards carried shields of pure white hide taken from the royal herd.
