A cunning survivor, the African Scrub hare is the protagonist in hundreds of traditional African folk tales; indeed the stories crossed the Atlantic with the slave ships, giving rise to the same stories in American folklore: those of ‘Brer Rabbit’.
The Scrub hare is widespread over southern Africa but is not common. Mainly noctunal, they prefer the nutritious grasses of the ‘sweetveld’, lying up during the day in thick grass or dense bushes. When disturbed they flush at the last minute, dashing off in a fast zig-zag. They are preyed upon by owls and pythons and occasionally, cheetahs which are the only predators capable of running them down.
