The Ground Hornbill paces solemnly around the bushveld, checking here and there for anything to eat. Its gentle yellow eyes are fringed with glamorously long eyelashes.
Ground Hornbills are large, handsome birds, standing 90cm (40 inches) tall. They live in family groups of five or six individuals, staying within sight of each other as they forage through the bush for fruit, insects and small reptiles. The group roosts together in a large tree at night, and at dawn their deep, booming call - perhaps territorial - announces the start of their day’s walkabout.
Although largely terrestrial, their huge wings can carry them out of danger fast when necessary. The male ground hornbill has a larger red wattle than the female, who sports a pretty blue patch on hers.
