The ‘Grey ghost of Africa’, a Kudu is a remarkable animal, and one of our largest antelopes. A 250kg bull can drift soundlessly through the bush and is capable of jumping a 2-metre fence with apparent ease.
Elegant, powerful and wary, Kudus move in fairly small mixed groups or bachelor herds. They will ‘freeze’ when suspicious and become practically invisible. If you follow, they vanish.
They are the woodland savanna’s omnivorous vegetarians - although mainly browsers they owe their excellent survival rate to their ability to eat anything from grass to the vegetables in your garden. They always approach water very carefully and are often most active at night.
Kudus are very beautiful with huge, pink-lined ears and a characteristic white bar between the eyes - the males carry spectacular spiral horns of up to 180cms.
