The African fish eagle is found in pairs everywhere there is permanent water; conspicuous and proud, it throws back its head to fling a challenging cry right at the sun, producing a call that rings out over the water in one of the continent’s most evocative sounds.
An expert raptor, the African fish eagle stoops at high speed with the sun behind it, braking at the last moment, talons extended, to grab any fish unwise enough to linger near the surface. As they strike they have sometimes been observed to go right under the water. The slippery prey is grasped with the help of incredibly sharp talons and large, sandpaper-textured feet.
Fish eagles do not tolerate other large fish-eating birds nearby and will chase off goliath herons and cormorants, sometimes preying on their young, too.
The American version of the African fish eagle is the Bald eagle.
