The chameleon is a master of camouflage and hunts insects by lurking in wait and then shooting out its long, adhesive tongue with great accuracy.
Every healthy habitat has chameleons. As youngsters, my children would have great fun with these fascinating creatures whenever one was found in the garden. Chameleons cannot move fast, and so when threatened they bravely stand their ground, puffed up and hissing furiously, showing a toothless pink mouth. They are easy to capture, and it would usually take an absorbing afternoon to study them as they would change colour, pretend to be a leaf swaying in the breeze, and move their dry, ink-dotted eyes in all directions. Sometimes we would feed them grasshoppers and moths.
Many African clans have a superstitious horror of chameleons. They are associated with death in the old legends which tell of the time of creation, when the chameleon, by being too slow, brought mortality to humankind.
