The 'King of the Beasts' were common all over Africa in the days of the Romans. Today however these regal cats can be observed in the wild only within protected reserves.
Lions live in family groups of up to 30 in a good hunting area. There is always one dominant male, plus his adult sons or brothers. The males’ job is to defend the pride’s territory, leaving the coast clear for the females to hunt and look after the cubs. Males mark the boundaries of their territory with urine, and by roaring to advertise their presence. The lion’s roar is deep and loud: “ Oouuuuuuuuu- AH! followed by three deep grunts. The African people say this means: “Whose land is this? Mine! Mine! Mine!”. Lions will fight a serious challenger to the death.
The lionesses often hunt co-operatively, setting up an ambush for the chosen quarry. The male lions arrive at the scene of the kill and eat first, followed by the females. The cubs get the leftovers. This is lion law, and sometimes cubs will go hungry and even starve when food is scarce. The logic of this is clear: the most important thing is the hunting ground, so the males must be in good condition to defend it. The lionesses are then able to hunt, and if the cubs die, well - the pride will breed again later. The rules of survival are hard!
