Patrick has a natural gift for story-telling and it is from his stories, accumulated over a lifetime, that he draws his creative inspiration. Whimsical, observant and dramatic - Patrick's work spans a wide range of emotions.

Some of these stories are about the sculptures themselves and others are about the historical and cultural background to the African motifs that features in Patrick's work.

Rhino, White

The White rhinoceros is a grazer, with a wide, square lip and a better disposition than its cousin the Black rhino.

Next to its cousin the Black rhinoceros, the White (or wide-lipped) rhinoceros is huge, but much less aggressive. Its massive head is carried low. It is a grazer with a prehistoric, armour-plated look. The white rhino male is also territorial, but more sociable than the Black rhino, and family groups of females may form which wander between overlapping territories. The calf will practically always walk in front of its mother. Although endangered in most of its traditional range, the White rhino is a conservation success story in South Africa. Trade in rhino horn is banned, but poached horns are still used to make dagger handles in the Arab countries; a vanity symbol of wealth and virility.
