Patrick has a natural gift for story-telling and it is from his stories, accumulated over a lifetime, that he draws his creative inspiration. Whimsical, observant and dramatic - Patrick's work spans a wide range of emotions.
Some of these stories are about the sculptures themselves and others are about the historical and cultural background to the African motifs that features in Patrick's work.

Bushpig
The African bushpig is a nocturnal animal, and resembles the European wild boar but stands only 80cm at the shoulder.
Like their northern cousins, African bushpigs are covered in coarse hair, and they mostly root up tubers but will eat almost anything, including carrion when they can find it.
Bushpigs prefer thick forest and dense bush, often near water. The sow constructs a haystack-like nest in thick cover, where her babies are born. The piglets have white stripes, again like the European wild pig.
The bushpig is aggressive and can be dangerous if surprised in the wild. They defend themselves with their razor- sharp tusks and it appears that of the predators, only the big cats are willing to take them on.
