Elephant Mafunyane Silver Sculpture

In the Shangaan dialect, Mafunyane means ‘the irritable one’. Mafunyane was probably the most famous of the Magnificent Seven tuskers. This magnificent but bad-tempered bull elephant, who stood 327cm at the shoulder, was easily recognisable by his straight chisel-ended tusks and by the large hole in his forehead. The size of a man’s fist and probably the result of an old bullet wound, this hole went right down through to his nasal passage. When he spouted water from his trunk, a similar spout issued out of his forehead!

Another distinctive mark of Mafunyane was that one of his toes on the left hind foot was splayed out the side. His tusks weighed 55.1 kilograms each and were 2.51 metres long. Beautifully matched, his tusks touched the ground in front of him and were bevelled from the constant friction. In 1983, Mafunyane was tranquillized so that he could be fitted with a collar for park rangers to follow his movements. Because of his immense tusks, he was unable to rise when given the antidote. A front-end loader was brought in to hoist him up again. He died in 1983 of natural causes on his home range in the Kruger National Park.
