The idea came from a Leadwood tree, or Umtswili as the Matabele people call it. On Patrick’s great-grandfather’s farm, there is a particular tree that has stood for a few hundred years. It is called the Missionary Tree and it was under this tree in 1885 that a concession was signed between Robert Moffat, the missionary, and King Lobengula of the Matabele Tribe. Patrick states, ‘I imagined the many elephants that must have passed beneath its branches and thought it would be wonderful to create a Tree of Lights with a herd of elephants beneath it. What a memorable experience it would be for children to sit at a big table on high days and holidays and watch a whole herd of shining silver elephants pass before them’. The seven big bulls displayed with the Tree of Lights are the seven famous lone bulls from southern and east Africa. Mafunyane, Shingwedzi, Shawu and Ndlulamiti, are from the mopane woodland and scrub region of the Kruger National Park. Dande roamed the Dande area south of the Zambezi River and Ahmed comes from the forest area of Mount Marsabit in Kenya. As always, the sculptural detail is faithful. The crocodile bark of the tree reflects light while the base displays a large anthill, elephant footprints and even the unmistakable clods of elephant dung.
