Toad Sitting (Medium)

The African toad story begins at a certain time at a certain temperature when the rain softens the ground and releases thousands of flying ants, or Aelates, to pursue their queen. Every creature that can eat in this part of the world relishes flying ants. Birds fill the sky hawking them, rodents eat them, children trap them and toads hop about whacking them with their big, sticky tongues.

The Definitive Luxury Brand From Africa

Patrick, the great storyteller and sculptor, tells the story of the toad: ‘The excitement for every creature is quite apparent but Mr. Toad, who draws his tongue back into his mouth with more and more flying ants, fills his stomach quickly and finds that he can no longer hop to his meal and has to waddle like a big, fat, ungainly human being. Even his tongue slows down and the hapless flying ant who is stuck to the end of it is dragged slowly back as the bloated amphibian struggles to open his mouth to eat its snack. I have loved watching these toads (Bufo) at sunset since I was a young boy. They are a great subject to sculpt, particularly with the highlights of their big, round, shining eyes, their warts, their lumpy skins and their semi-webbed feet tucked up beneath them’.
